Kick off : Thingscon Salon By Info.nl by Iskander Smit (Info.nl)
We are kicking off with a talk by workshop moderator: Iskander Smit (Info.nl) on Sunday!
ThingsCon Amsterdam will organise a special Salon edition on SXSW in the Dutch pavilion. ThingsCon is one of the biggest European conferences focused on the design and making of the Internet of Things. Next to the annual conference in December ThingsCon organises focused Salons throughout the year.
At SXSW the Salon will be dedicated to the impact of IoT on the way we will use things. New beyond screen interactions, haptic feedback and more. Next to that, the thing will be a platform for service makers. Things will be adaptive to the moment of use and will take different roles towards the user. Interactions will be conversations.
The Salon is moderated by Iskander Smit, manager of the innovation lab or Info.nl (LABS) and chairman of ThingsCon Amsterdam. With LABS Iskander Smit is involved in several research projects and experimental products to experiment these new things.
An example is the research of PhD Nazli Cila from University of Amsterdam on ‘Products as Agents’. Products that can take the role of a collector, actor or creator. The research is well received in the scientific community. Based on these research LABS is conducting several experiments in designing the new things.
Another research track is on haptic interfaces. LABS is part of a project to valorize the research by the universities of Twente and Amsterdam to a haptic sleeve that creates a so-called Internet of Touch. Bridging research and practice is key. Several other experiments and research has given lots of insights in the values of haptics as interaction touchpoint.
The Salon will run about 3 hours. In the first part (about an hour) we will have an interactive session where Iskander will share the latest insights from research and future developments in things.
In the second part (2 hours) we will do a design session in groups to explore the possible impact on current things. We will have materials to feel things and to speak to things. The learnings from the participants will be actively shared.
Talk will take place between 01:30 PM - 04:00 PM in the NDW House.
Be there or be square!
