Pauline van Dongen is a Dutch fashion designer specialized in wearable technology. Established in 2010, her studio is constantly involved in a diverse array of projects that span various disciplines, locations and collaborators. The studio is immersed in the dynamic intersection of fashion and technology and is dedicated to collaborative, cross-disciplinary work that enables innovation and experimentation to take the form of a truly wearable and desirable product. Pauline’s vision is based on the belief that technology can add new value and meaning to fashion and can enhance the way we experience the world around us.
As a creator interested in the notion of interactivity in fashion, Pauline van Dongen researches the human body in relation to its surroundings. She is fascinated by concepts of change, movement, energy and perception, since she believes the future of fashion lies in its premise to be dynamic and changing. To her, technology is not a mere tool, but rather one of aesthetics. There’s a strong focus on materiality in her work and the way it is capable of enhancing expression. The fact that we can now program it pixel by pixel, allows us to design new types of behavior and create materials that can actively play on the body. The language and expression of the body give form to the garment thus establishing an intimate and personal connection with the wearer, thus turning technology in something intuitive.
Recent projects include work with solar cells, the integration of light in textile and new developments in 3D printed fashion using body scanning and generative design tools. Pauline has presented her work in numerous festivals and exhibitions around the world including SXSW, Northside Festival, Wearable Futures, The Future of Fashion is Now, Dutch Design Week and TEDx.
At SXSW her new designed and created ‘ISSHO’, a denim jacket made out of touch sensitive materials will have its world premiere. With this design, a brand new mindset has been created by combining fashion, experience and emotion into one piece. ISSHO is a counter-reaction to functional and cognition driven wearables that are not able to find any connection with the consumer and the fashion industry.
